![]() The Information Systems Laboratory (ISL) is an interdisciplinary research group in the Department of Electrical Engineering, located in the Packard Electrical Engineering Building. Formed in the early 1960s, in the words of one of its founders, "to emphasize the study of systems rather than devices, manipulate information rather than energy, and apply mathematics rather than physics," ISL has grown in size and international reputation to include approximately xx faculty, xx Research Associates and postdocs, xx full time staff, and 100 PhD students. Research in ISL is focused on the development and application of mathematical techniques and algorithms for information processing, communication and storage, broadly construed. Over the years, ISL has played leadership roles in the development of the foundations of signal processing, systems and control, and information theory and their applications in wired and wireless communications, medical imaging, image and video compression, cryptography, computer networks, and IC design and manufacturing, among other areas. In addition to being internationally recognized for its excellence, research in ISL has also had significant impact on industry with many ISL alumni playing key roles in the founding and management of successful high technology companies. Current specific research areas in ISL include, but are not limited to:
* Magnetic Resonance Imaging Many of the projects in these areas are interdisciplinary in nature and involve collaborations with other labs in EE and other departments including Computer Science, Statistics, Management Science and Engineering, Aero and Astro, Biological Sciences, Psychology, and the school of Medicine. For more information about ISL areas of research, see the current research projects list and the individual faculty webpages. Research in ISL is sponsored by several US government agencies, including NSF, NIH, and DARPA, by industry, by University centers, including CIS, SNRC, MediaX, and by generous donations from ISL Alumni. The Director of ISL is Professor El Gamal. ![]() ![]() |
